The basics in getting more luck
I was reviewing a mental model today from The Great Mental Models Volume 1: General Thinking Concepts and saw something about having the necessary requirements to be successful in any endeavour.
What it was saying exactly was that even if you have the necessary requirements, it still might not be enough to be successful. But without it, you are guaranteeing failure.
So how does this apply to our lives?
Well, let’s say you want to build a following online through Medium. Well, the necessary requirements would be to write 5 days per week, be a good writer, and write about interesting topics.
Doing all that might not lead you to success, but without it, you won’t get close in getting a following.
This is kind of depressing right? It makes us realize that our efforts might not lead to success. But here is the thing, if you stay consistent in fulfilling the necessary requirements, then you are giving yourself a chance to get lucky.
The more times you put your work out there and the more times you show up, the higher chance that luck might choose you and pay off all of your hard work.
There is even a popular quote from Thomas Jefferson about this: ‘I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
And the funny thing is that most people are not willing to work hard to fulfill the necessary requirements. If you don’t put in the work, then you are taking luck out of the equation.
It’s that simple.
You have to realize that luck can be a significant factor in your life, so why not make yourself susceptible to luck by doing the basics in whatever it is you want to achieve.
In hockey, a significant amount of goals are scored off a lucky bounce. And none of those lucky bounces would occur if the players aren’t doing the basics like making correct passes and shooting at the net.
So go out and do the same.
Do the basics and get ready for a lucky bounce, since one might be coming your way.
